Once Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar (September 26, 1820 – July 29, 1891) was invited to England as the Chairman of an Assembly. He always did his work in time. Punctuality was his first and foremost policy. Due to that reason he was often said- “Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar’s every work is accomplished in accord to the clock’s hands.” He reached the assembly in correct time. But the participants were roaming outside the assembly hall. The reason when asked, came to be known that the cleaning staffs had not reached the place in time and the hall wasn’t clean. That’s why the programme had been delayed.

When Vidyasagar heard this, he took a sweep and started cleaning the auditorium. Seeing him clean, many others joined him. In a while, the full auditorium was clean and the furniture was placed accordingly.

When the assembly began, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar said- “Either it be a human or the country, should always be independent. You all saw a while ago, we were worried just because a couple of persons hadn’t arrived. Maybe they were not notified or were barred by any natural causes. In that case, do we postpone today’s programme? Doing so, many persons today’s labour could have been wasted. That’s why every person should be self-subsistent/independent and if problems arise, should not hesitate to do anything.
